Site Update: BBC EastBank Studios
BBC EastBank Studios is taking shape on the former Olympic site in East London, with the building’s shell and core, designed by Allies and Morrison, nearing completion. Fit-out works are scheduled to begin in the Autumn.
The studios form a key part of the East Bank cultural district, alongside the V&A, Sadler’s Wells and UAL.
Flanagan Lawrence are leading the interior fit-out and design of the studios for the BBCX and are designed to house the BBC Symphony Orchestra and Chorus, the BBC Singers, and the BBC’s Rock and Pop output.
The building comprises three purpose-built studios with associated control rooms and support spaces:
• Studio 1 – A large orchestral rehearsal and recording space with audience capacity for up to 300, featuring flexible acoustics and simplified rigging for seamless adaptation.
• Studio 2 – A multipurpose space accommodating the BBC Singers, Rock and Pop output, and Radio 3’s chamber music needs, with integrated stage engineering and lighting.
• Studio 3 – Primarily for popular music with small audiences, drawing inspiration from Maida Vale’s MV4 but enhanced with advanced broadcast technologies.
Delivered in association with the LLDC, ARUP and AECOM, the new studios are set to support live performance and the wider community.
