Planning Consent Secured for Performing Arts Centre Transformation
The Old Library in the centre of Cardiff is being redeveloped as a performing arts centre for the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama. Planning and Listed Building Approval have been achieved for the retrofit and change of use of the Grade 2 * Listed Building.
Externally, the reimagined entrance strips away 20th Century additions to reveal the building’s historic fabric while creating an accessible and welcoming approach. The new design allows the foyer to flow seamlessly out into the cityscape, with the potential for the Conservatoire’s students to perform on the steps, which now doubles as an outdoor stage.
Internally, the large reading rooms are being transformed into light-filled, acoustically optimised spaces, perfectly suited for the rehearsal and performance of music and drama.
A key objective of the project is to enable the Old Library to achieve net zero carbon, aligning with the College’s environmental goals while preserving the building’s historical significance.
