The "Centrale del Foro Italico" project in Rome represents a transformative endeavour that aims to revitalize this historic sports facility while preserving its architectural significance. This initiative is part of a two-phase open design competition, with a particular focus on introducing a retractable roofing system to enhance the venue's versatility and enable year-round use.

Flanagan Lawrence entered the first phase of the competition in 2020. This phase involved technical feasibility studies and economic evaluations, culminating in their acceptance and progression to the second phase.

The project's design concept hinged on key principles, including the completion of the existing stadium with a focus on external facade renovations. The centrepiece is a movable roof system, allowing for both indoor and outdoor events while adhering to height limitations set by existing elevations. Sustainability was a core consideration, with an emphasis on environmentally friendly design and technological solutions.

The design allows The Centrale to be accessible from multiple sides, making it an integral part of the civic landscape. Its alignment with an urban grid presented a unique chance to harmonize with existing urban rules, influencing the roof design, enclosure, and interior layout. The existing structural grid offered opportunities to enhance the tennis court while elevating the Centrale's overall appeal.

The new roof structure was envisioned with elegance and harmony in mind, seamlessly blending with the existing Foro Italico structure. Structural efficiency was prioritized, minimizing complex interfaces and modifications. Simplicity in geometry was a guiding principle to ensure cost-effectiveness. Architectural expression was another focal point, eliminating the need for additional cladding or embellishments. Easy maintenance was key for long-term usability, and comprehensive enclosure ensured thermal control.

The Centrale del Foro Italico project represents a harmonious blend of history and innovation. It aims to rejuvenate a historic sports venue while ensuring its adaptability and sustainability. With an elegant retractable roof system and a commitment to architectural excellence, this project promises to transform the Foro Italico into a versatile, functional, and visually stunning destination for sports and entertainment enthusiasts.
