Live Works wins BCO National Awards 2019

Live Works has won the prestigious BCO National Awards for ‘Projects up to 1500m2’! Live Works is part of Live Theatre’s evolving cultural quarter in Newcastle, which transforms a century old gap on the Quayside into a place for the community. The project comprises of a new centre for children and young writers, in a converted Grade 2 listed almshouse (Live Tales); a vibrant, public ‘pocket park’, which reopens and revitalises the only remaining Grade 2* Georgian courtyard in the city (Live Garden); and new offices where the rental income will fund at least one play and education project each year for Live Theatre.

This follows many other successes for the scheme, including a RIBA National Award, three RIBA North East Awards and a Civic Trust National Award. One of the BCO's primary objectives is to define excellence in office space. As part of this objective their annual Awards Programme provides public recognition for top quality design and functionality and a benchmark for excellence in workplaces.

The BCO Awards Judges said:

“The team have successfully overcome the challenge of stitching a commercial building into the urban fabric of this richly historic Newcastle neighbourhood… The buildings have been delivered with a high level of sensitivity... and the building and public realm have successfully unified disparate elements of the urban environment.

This impressive development is a prime example of how an office building can be merged into a challenging cultural context. As well as securing the immediate financial future for Live Theatre this exceptional business and community project has delivered an economic legacy which the city and the wider region will benefit from for many years to come.”
